Mainz - Advanced Handpan Workshop Module "Rhythm" (2 days)

The Leander Greitemann Masterclass is aimed at all those who have already taken their first steps on the handpan and would like further inspiration.

• Do you sometimes sit at your instrument and can’t think of anything new?
• Have you lost your initial enthusiasm and have been playing less or not at all recently?
• You know a few beat patterns and maybe even a whole song, but it’s not so easy for you to create something new?
• Would you like to get (even more) into free improvisation, from which real songs emerge?
• You are inspired by my game and want to know my secret 😉?
• Do you want to get more out of your head and more into your feelings when playing?
• Would you like to have endless new starting points for new songs, compositions and improvisation?

If you only answer “yes” to one question, then you’ve come to the right place (and if not, then ask me your questions and we’ll see if they are answered in the masterclass).

The Masterclass consists of three main courses. These are the basic building blocks of all music: rhythm – harmony – melody. You can either book them all one after the other or choose just one topic that particularly interests you. The three courses are logically structured. However, you do not necessarily need the previous courses to keep up with an individual topic. We will offer several rounds. You can also complete the three parts in a different order.

Rhythm. Understand the heartbeat of your music better and feel it even more.

You can also play the handpan without having any idea of rhythm. But it makes a huge difference when you really understand rhythm – and more importantly: feel it. I’ve seen many who play beautiful melodies and harmonies but have no real sense of rhythm and therefore miss the chance for real groove and truly captivating music. Rhythm is essential, especially when interacting with others – because it is the common language we need to communicate perfectly. Everything we learn about rhythm is always transferred directly to your handpan playing and increases your expressive possibilities. Because new rhythms always mean new songs, new playing fields on the handpan.

We will cover the following topics (and more):

• What is a beat, how do we count and feel it?
• 4/4,3/4, 6/8, 7/8 Learning to understand, feel and love
• Entry into polyrythms
• Access to Polymeter
• How can you discover new grooves yourself?
• Pattern forge: We learn a few groovy patterns.
• Why Hand-To-Hand can do much more than most people realize

The workshop lasts 2 days (!):

Saturday:

15:30 – 16:00: Arrive, browse the Soundsculpture store

16:00 – 18:00: Intro, rhythm basics, grooving and playing together

18:00 – 19:30: Dinner in the city/time for jams in small groups

19:30 – 21:00: Understanding different rhythms and using them with ease. Small concert at the end

Sunday:

09:30 – 10:00: Arrival, spontaneous jams in small groups or alone

10:00 – 12:00: Repetition and consolidation. Hand-to-hand application areas

12:00 – 13:00 Lunch break and time to jam

13:00 – 14:30 Polymeter, open questions, video recording of the most important content, what happens at home?

14:30 End and conclusion
